The Role of Meaning in Books
A NOTE FOR TEACHERS AND PARENTS:
Stories have the power to teach and heal in deeply private ways. By their very nature, well-written books give us solitary time to absorb and ponder, unlike quick, jolting forms of entertainment that leave us temporarily amused, filled with adrenaline, or heart-warmed. Books have the power to transform and even alter one’s direction in life because of their potential to awaken the meaning we search for from our soul.
Facebook, Twitter and YouTube are a big part of my life, and I enjoy using them when I’m in the mood. But when it comes to living my life with meaning, those sources of cultural story telling feel so fragmented and disconnected to me. Books help me feel connected to the world. They are a beacon in a stormy world that shines light on where I came from, why I’m here, and where I’m going. I hope you have a transformational experience as you delve into whatever meaning Secret Speakers has for you: on your own, in a group, or with your students. Show no mercy.
