Hallelujiah!

After watching Lee DeWyze sing Hallelujiah last night, it’s all I can think about. It describes perfectly how I feel about being right here, right now where I am with my life, my children, and Secret Speakers. If you haven’t heard it yet, it’s definitely worth listening to. I get chills each time I listen to it!

My First Book Signing Ever

My first book signing: Costco

So this last week I did my first signing ever, and it was at Costco. I discovered the best part of writing Secret Speakers: meeting the people who are going to read it and become part of the Secret Speakers family. Here I am at Costco with family who was there to help out, a Read & Rate it early reader I finally got to meet after over a year (who brought me a smoothie. Thanks, Weldon!), a librarian, and children who loved the Luminamen display.

Good times, good times. The next two days I could hardly get out of bed, so it was definitely a workout for yours truly. Lots of signings ahead. I think I can, I think I can, I think I can. Besides, I have to get out of the house. I had so much fun. I’m off to do more signings today, and wonder just who I’ll meet today! I’ve done one more in between that first day and today, and I was thrilled that two people bought copies for their family read-alouds. My husband told me one of his athletes’ grandmothers stole her copy to read to her granddaughter because she’d started reading it to her as a bedtime story when they were visiting, and her grand daughter insisted they had to finish it. It does my heart good to know the story is being read.

A Sneak Peak at Illustrations

ss-l-mousess-t-quicksandss-t-sunsetHere are a few sneak peaks of the chapter heading illustrations I’m doing for Secret Speakers. I’ve used the Jugendstil font designed by Heinrich Vogeler around 1905, based on the German blackletter tradition. Instead of using his illustrations, I’ve replaced, and am still working on replacing them with my own. I’d love to know what you think.

Where Lamb’s Tavern Got it’s Name

p1010253 p1010255For those early readers who participated in the Secret Speakers: Read and Rate It global event, I thought you might be interested to know that Lamb’s Tavern got it’s name from one of my favorite restaurants in Salt Lake City, Lamb’s Grill and Café, owned by John Spiro. It’s one of those places that has the old wood paneling still on the walls, deep red vinyl seats in the boots, and hooks to hang your coat. The braised lamb shank is my favorite. It’s also the oldest restaurant in town and is on the historic register or something like that!

My fella Patrick and I drove up to Salt Lake for a date night out and he took this photo of me with John. It turns out he studied pharmacy under my uncle Ewart Swinyard who was the Dean of Pharmacy at the University of Utah.
